Thousands of consumers impacted by Bassett Furniture’s July 2021 to April 2023 data breach have until Feb. 28 to file claims for compensation under a class action settlement. The breach potentially exposed sensitive customer information, including names, addresses and financial account details through vulnerabilities in Bassett’s third-party e-commerce platform.

Key Dates and Compensation Details

  • Claim Deadline: February 28, 2025—online or postmarked.
  • Final Approval Hearing: February 12, 2025
  • Payout Timing: Benefits distributed after the hearing, pending court approval.

Eligibility For Compensation

Those notified by mail about the breach can claim:

  • Ordinary Losses: Up to $2,000 for documented expenses like bank fees, credit reporting, credit freezing, professional fees, postage or mileage.
  • Extraordinary Losses: Up to $10,000 for identity theft, fraud, or credit repair costs.
  • Time Compensation: $25 an hour for up to 4 hours with no documentation, or 10 hours with proof.
  • All claimants also receive 24 months of free credit monitoring.

How the Breach Unfolded

Between July 2021 and April 2023, unauthorized parties gained access to Bassett’s e-commerce systems, potentially exposing customer data. While the investigation was not able to confirm what customer information was potentially accessed or taken as a result of the incident, the company has agreed set aside funds for the settlement, as Social Security numbers and financial information may have been compromised. In response to the data breach, Bassett implemented measures to address the issue, including shutting down portions of its IT infrastructure, which temporarily impacted some operations, such as manufacturing.
