Is Gervonta Davis trolling his opponent and the boxing community, or is his March 1 fight with Lamonth Roach Jr. really canceled?

Davis sent fans into an uproar on Monday after he posted the image below on his Instagram account. Uncrowned captured the image and posted it on X.

I couldn’t contact Davis, but I did reach out to Roach Jr’s publicist Nilo Wright to ask if him or his client had been notified about a cancellation or delay. “Nope, still preparing as planned for March 1st,” Wright said.

Also, Roach was asked by several people and he was seemingly getting irritated with the consistent questions. According to Roach, he’s still “locked in” for March 1.

Davis has since deleted the post, but the havoc has been created.

There’s seemingly some thought that the fight could be in jeopardy around the boxing world. Oscar De La Hoya, the face of Golden Boy posted at Davis on Monday evening offering him an opponent if he needs one.

I spoke with Roach in October about the fight. He shared his thoughts on the fight and more.

Here is the corrected and refined text following GPS rules, ensuring grammar, punctuation, and spelling corrections while retaining the original voice and verbiage:

From the outset, Davis has been criticized for his decision to fight Roach. Davis is considered one of the top fighters and draws in the sport. He’s the reigning WBC champion at 135 pounds.

While Roach is the WBA Super Featherweight champion, he’s considered undersized for a clash with Davis. Almost no one is giving him a chance to win. According to odds and percentages on Box Line, there is a 91% chance of Davis winning, while Roach is given a 9% chance. Davis opened as a massive favorite at (-2000). Roach opened as a huge underdog (+850).

The fight was originally scheduled to take place in December in Houston. However, it was pushed back to March, and the location was shifted to The Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

At this point, at best, the fight is in question.

Davis hasn’t fought since June 2024, when he scored an explosive eighth-round KO victory over Frank Martin. Davis remains undefeated at 30-0 with 28 KOs. He’s scored four wins in a row by KO and is in the Top 10 on most pound-for-pound rankings.

Davis wanted to fight IBF champion and Ukrainian legend Vasyl Lomachenko, but the latter isn’t sure he wants to continue fighting. Lomachenko won his title with an 11th-round TKO win over George Kambosos Jr. in May.

With the Lomachenko issues and the first delay of the Roach fight, Davis has seemingly been a bit frustrated with the state of things in his career. During the press event to promote the fight, Davis raised eyebrows when he said he was going to retire at the end of 2025.

It’s tough to tell if the instability is Davis playing mind games with Roach or if he’s in actual conflict about his career. We’ll see if the fight is canceled or if this becomes just another detail of the storyline leading to the fight in March.
