One of Netflix’s most popular spy shows has returned just a short while after its most popular spy show. That would be The Recruit, back for season 2, a bit after The Night Agent came back for its own season 2, which has planted itself on top of the Netflix Top 10 list, only unseated by WWE Raw for a single day.
Like The Night Agent, review scores for season 2 of The Recruit are so far higher than season 1, albeit with relatively few reviews in. It’s starting strong among critics, albeit the few audience reviews in score it a bit lower. As it stands, here’s the breakdown:
If those figures hold, that’s a significant jump between seasons, indicating they may have improved on the first one based on feedback. It’s a bit odd that it is so similar in theme to The Night Agent, with a non-well-trained character thrust into high danger situations for the government, but the tones are different and The Recruit has a bit more comedy infused. It also has a more well-known actor in the form of Netflix favorite Noah Centineo, where this has further increased his profile to the general public, as being the star of a top show on Netflix usually does. Here’s the synopsis for season 2:
“In Season 2 of The Recruit, CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks is pulled into life-threatening espionage in South Korea only to realize the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the agency.”
Here’s some thoughts from Centineo, who gets into spoilers from season 1:
“Owen’s headspace is complete chaos,” says Centineo. “He has just witnessed Max — the former CIA asset whom he almost died multiple times trying to protect — get shot by her daughter Nichka. Owen is wondering how in the hell he is going to survive the next few seconds of his life.”
The Recruit has not been auto-greenlit by Netflix for a third season, which is what happened with The Night Agent, but this does not seem like a series that is going to get shut down before it runs for a while longer, given its popularity. The show was even charting recently for season 1 before season 2 got here, indicating significant interest. It may not be able to top The Night Agent any time soon, but that was one of the most-watched series in Netflix history, so that’s not exactly something to be disappointed by. It will get there eventually however, mark my words.
