The wait is finally over (nearly).
The race is on. With Google confirming a June timeline for its Android 16 release, there’s barely a quarter for Samsung to update its entire line-up (bar the Galaxy S25) with the current Android 15 OS. It has become something of a nightmare that flagships are still running Android 14 almost 6-months after Pixels upgraded.
Samsung has now said that its Galaxy phones will start receiving the stable One UI 7 / Android 15 release “in April.” This despite an earlier announcement that newer flagships would be upgraded before the end of March. Despite various forum moderators assuring that the delays are all down to perfecting the OS, that has been cold comfort for a user base missing out on Google’s and Samsung’s latest features.
This has been made more painful because Android 15 is a major security and privacy update, coming at a time when the mobile threat landscape is getting worse. For Samsung to catch iPhone — to say nothing of Pixel — it needs to be faster off the mark with these new innovations to keep users, their devices and their data safe. Google continues to innovate on the security front, with new scam detection joining live threat protection, and with Samsung adding USB and network defenses into the mix.
A few days ago we had seen a leak suggesting it would be mid to late April before many of these phones received One UI 7, but now a new — and equally unofficial — leak suggests it might come quicker. Last year’s Galaxy S24 could receive their update from April 1st, it says, while S23 owners would be a fortnight behind, on April 14th.
The timeline shared on X comes from a Turkish website and leaked report. For the upgrade to only miss Samsung’s earlier end of March timeline by 24-hours would seem to be some surprisingly good news for S24 users at least, after months of delays. This is even more acute now that cheaper new Samsung are getting One UI 7 before the S24.
Unfortunately for those same owners, there’s a new issue lurking in the background. Google’s nasty surprise for March, with two zero-day warnings, one of which is a repeat from November has now prompted a U.S. government warning. One of the two fixes did not make it into Samsung’s March security release, and so that deadline will be missed.
